Message from Founder

Lakhphuti Sherpa was born in 1964 in a remote village called Mushey in Solukhumbu situated on the gateway to Mt. Everest. She learned mountaineering from her father Phuri Galzen Sherpa and as she is a Sherpa woman, mountaineering and tourism are in her blood. After working for forty three years in the mountaineering industry, Lakhphuti achieved excellent knowledge in the mountaineering field, which she to apply to every trip she coordinates. 

Back in the spring of 1993, she was the deputy team leader of the first Nepalese Women Expedition to Everest. It was the very team that had accompanied first female Nepali mountaineer, National Luminary Late Pasang Lhamu Sherpa to the summit of the Everest. 

Among the expeditions that she has organized, first high level civil servant expedition in 2011 remains as the most successful one. The team leader of the expedition was the Chief Secretary of Nepal Government himself. Out of 15 participants, 9 were able to reach to the summit.

Apart from her adventures as a mountaineer, she has travelled and trekked extensively all over Nepal, parts of Tibet, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Ladakh, Lahore and Kashmir.

She spent eleven years on the mountains of Switzerland as she temporarily resided in the town of Verbier with her ex-husband, who was a famous mountain guide. It was a great opportunity for her because; it gave her a chance to make friends in a distant country and to understand the mindset of clients from Europe. It offered her with an outlook of how the European extend their hospitality and also what they expect as a client.

When she briefs her guides during trainings and orientations, she focuses on the very things she was able to learn there. During her time in Verbier, she learnt French, which is one of her favorite languages. She really feels glad when a client communicates in French and she feels that she is more expressive and clearer when she speaks to them in French.

She was appointed as an executive member for Nepal Mountain Academy, is a fully government funded institute under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, by the government of Nepal for two years. Following that, she held the office as the Executive Director to the academy for two consecutive terms that lasted 8 years. In her capacity as the Executive Director of the academy, she was able to start a ski training course for the first time in Nepal for Nepalese. She also was able to begin a course for women that provided them with trekking guide training. She was able to design and commence courses related to mountain management and conflict management on mountain whitewater. Starting from this year, Bachelor of Mountaineering Studies has been started in the academy, which is first in the world. Master in Adventure Tourism is yet another course that is proposed and is on process for receiving validation from concerned agencies.

Another important initiations taken on by the Academy is providing the weather forecast to trekkers and mountaineers. Jointly started in association with Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), this program employs an expert weather specialist who provides weather forecast during the high season. This has led to proper circulation of weather information among trekking and mountaineering groups that has brought about significant reduction of casualties during trekking or expeditions. Mountaineers and trekkers along with tourism entrepreneurs highly approve of it, owing to the reduction in risk in mountain area because of volatile weather.

She has authored two books: One of them is an autobiography named Himalma Chalis Barsa (Translation: Forty Years in the Mountains) and the other is a novel named Himalki Chhori (Translation: Daughter of the Mountains). Both of them have been commercially successful and owing to their nationwide acclaim, they have been used as reference books in many colleges and schools.
